The JLPT is the test most Indian students hear about first when they start planning a Master’s in Japan. The question that matters is simpler than the five levels suggest: which level does your route need, and by when?
We answer that for final-year B.Tech students aiming at October 2027 entry. Every rule below comes from the test organisers or from the Immigration Services Agency, checked on 6 October 2026.

What the JLPT measures
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test has run since 1984. It is organised by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, and outside Japan the Japan Foundation runs it with local host institutions.
It tests reading and listening. There is no speaking or writing paper. A certificate never expires, according to the official JLPT FAQ, although a university or employer can set its own time limit.
Who takes it
The test is designed for people whose first language is not Japanese. For an Indian applicant, it is the standard way to show Japanese ability on paper.
The five levels in plain terms
N5 is the easiest level and N1 the hardest. The descriptions below paraphrase the organisers’ own level summary.
| Level | Reading | Listening |
|---|---|---|
| N5 | Typical phrases in hiragana, katakana and basic kanji | Everyday and classroom topics |
| N4 | Familiar daily topics in basic vocabulary and kanji | Daily conversation, spoken slowly |
| N3 | Everyday written material with specific content | Everyday conversation at near-natural speed |
| N2 | Newspaper and magazine articles on a range of topics | Conversation and news at nearly natural speed |
| N1 | Logically complex and abstract writing, such as editorials | Lectures and news at natural speed |
How the levels map to CEFR
From the December 2025 test, the organisers publish a CEFR reference on passing score reports. A pass at N5 corresponds to A1 and a pass at N4 to A2. N2 corresponds to B1 or B2 depending on the total score, with 112 or more shown as B2. The details sit on the JLPT CEFR reference page.
How scoring and pass marks work
A pass needs two things at once: the overall pass mark and the pass mark for every scoring section. Strong reading cannot rescue a weak listening score.
| Level | Overall pass mark (out of 180) | Sectional minimum |
|---|---|---|
| N1 | 100 | 19 in each of three sections |
| N2 | 90 | 19 in each of three sections |
| N3 | 95 | 19 in each of three sections |
| N4 | 90 | 38 in language knowledge and reading, 19 in listening |
| N5 | 80 | 38 in language knowledge and reading, 19 in listening |

Section length
At N2 the language knowledge and reading paper runs 105 minutes, followed by 50 minutes of listening. At N5 the whole test is 90 minutes. You cannot sit only some sections.
The 2027 rule for Japanese-taught programmes
This is the part most applicants miss. The Immigration Services Agency has published a standard for international students entering universities and graduate schools from fiscal year 2027.
Where a student will take classes or receive research supervision in Japanese, the required level is B2 or above on Japan’s reference framework for Japanese language education. Until the end of fiscal year 2032, JLPT N2 or above is treated as meeting it, along with set scores on a few other tests. The full text is on the Immigration Services Agency page on Japanese ability for higher education.
What this means for October 2027 entrants
Fiscal year 2027 in Japan begins in April 2027. An October 2027 entrant into a Japanese-taught programme falls inside the new standard.
Which JLPT level your route needs
The critical choice is the route, and the level follows from it.
English-taught Master’s programmes
For an English-taught programme, the university sets the language requirement in its own application guidelines. The B2 standard above applies where teaching or supervision is in Japanese. Read each programme’s guidelines for the exact wording.
Students on this route still gain from N5 or N4. Daily life in Japan runs in Japanese, and a basic pass shows commitment. Our guide to masters in Japan explains how the two-year structure works once you are enrolled.
Japanese-taught Master’s programmes
Here the target is N2 or above, and you should plan for it early. N2 asks you to follow news at nearly natural speed.
Language school first
Some students spend a period at a Japanese language institution before a graduate programme. The Agency now requires those entrants to show A1-level Japanese by a test certificate or a school interview, and the rule already applies to new applications. Our certificate of eligibility Japan post covers the document that follows.
Dates, test cities and timing for October 2027
The 2026 tests fall on Sunday 5 July and Sunday 6 December. The test is held in July and December in Japan; some overseas cities hold only one of the two.
Test cities in India
India hosts the JLPT in several cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru. Each city’s local host institution runs registration, so the window and fee are set city by city. Check the official overseas list before planning around a date.
Planning backwards from October 2027
Some October 2027 application windows open this month. If your route needs a JLPT certificate at application, the sitting must come before the deadline, and results take time to arrive. For a Japanese-taught programme, that means starting N2 preparation now. For an English-taught programme, follow the programme’s guidelines, and treat an N5 or N4 pass as a strength on your profile.

Our view
Pick the route first, then the JLPT level. An engineering graduate heading for an English-taught programme needs strong English scores and a clear research fit, with Japanese as a bonus. A student aiming at a Japanese-taught programme needs N2, and the fiscal 2027 rule now puts that in writing.
