MS in Japan Intake 2027: Why October Is Your First Realistic Entry After B.Tech

The question our Japan desk is asked most often by final-year B.Tech students in India is some version of the same thing: the deadlines visible on Japanese university websites close in the next few weeks, so should I be applying now?

For almost all of them, the answer is no. The windows open this month lead to an intake they cannot enter. Understanding why takes about ten minutes and saves an entire year.

How the two Japanese intakes work

Japanese universities run two entry points into a Master’s programme.

April is the main intake. It follows the Japanese academic year and most domestic students enter here.

October or September is the second intake. It is the one built around international students, and it is where English-taught programmes concentrate.

Both are real. Both have seats. The application windows for each open roughly six to twelve months ahead, which is why September 2026 looks so busy: those windows point at April 2027.

Why April 2027 does not fit an Indian 2027 graduate

The obstacle here is a calendar.

An Indian B.Tech student in their final year finishes in May or June 2027. Provisional certificates, final transcripts and convocation often follow weeks or months after that.

Japanese April enrolment happens on 1 April 2027.

On that date the student has yet to complete the Bachelor’s degree. A Master’s programme cannot admit someone who has yet to finish the qualification it is built on, and the guidelines say so directly. Institute of Science Tokyo, for example, sets eligibility for its International Graduate Program as having completed sixteen years of education outside Japan, or expecting to complete it by the enrolment date. A May 2027 graduate meets neither condition on 1 April 2027.

This is the single most expensive misunderstanding we deal with. A student spends three months preparing documents for a window that was never open to them, misses the one that was, and loses a year.

Who the April 2027 intake suits

April 2027 belongs to a different applicant. Typically:

Someone who completed a B.Tech in 2026 or earlier and holds the degree certificate today.

Someone who has taken a year out after graduation.

Someone already in employment who is returning to study.

If you are in that group, the windows closing between now and December are worth a serious look, and you should move quickly.

What the October 2027 route looks like

If you are in your final year right now, October or September 2027 is your first realistic entry. April 2028 sits behind it as the fallback.

The autumn route suits the profile better in every practical respect.

You apply during your final year using predicted results and an expected-graduation certificate from your college.

You receive a decision before you graduate.

You use the summer for the Certificate of Eligibility, the visa, housing and travel.

You enrol in autumn with the completed degree certificate in hand.

The full two-year cost model sits in the post announcing this desk https://topuniadmit.com/blog/japan-desk-launch-2027 .The timing below sits on top of it.

That cycle is already being advertised. Doshisha University has published its International Science and Technology Course admissions guide covering both April 2027 and September 2027 entry. The University of Osaka’s Graduate School of Engineering has an October 2027 enrolment page live. The windows you care about open from late 2026 through to early 2027, and each one is set at programme level.

Three things that catch Indian applicants out

1. English-taught is decided programme by programme

A Japanese university can be internationally well known and still teach most of its engineering Master’s programmes in Japanese. English delivery is a property of the individual programme, sometimes of a single course within a department.

The only reliable check is that programme’s own admission page and its guidelines PDF. A general page welcoming international students confirms nothing about the language of instruction. Neither does a ranking table.

2. Supervisor consent is a hard gate at several universities

At a number of Japanese universities you cannot submit an application at all until a faculty member has agreed to supervise you.

Institute of Science Tokyo states on its International Graduate Program pages that applications will not be considered without the consent of a faculty member acting as the applicant’s academic supervisor. The consent letter is what unlocks access to the online application system.

The University of Osaka’s Graduate School of Engineering requires approval from an academic advisor before applying, and routes overseas applicants through its Admissions Assistance Desk first. Its Graduate School of Engineering Science tells applicants the desk takes at least three weeks to process a request, before any contact with a professor even begins.

Three weeks is the processing time alone. Add the supervisor’s own reply time and the research-plan discussion that usually follows, and this step has to start months before the window opens. Students who discover this requirement in January have already lost the cycle.

3. Admission pages go stale

We have found programme pages still serving the previous year’s dates, and fee pages several cohorts out of date. University websites in Japan update department by department, so one faculty can be current while another is a year behind.

Dates and fees have to be read from the current guidelines document for the specific programme and the specific entry year. Anything else is a guess with a university logo on it.

Your next sixty days

If you graduate in 2027, here is what is worth doing between now and November.

  1. Shortlist five to eight specific programmes rather than a list of university names.
  1. Confirm the language of instruction on each programme’s own admission page.
  1. Check whether supervisor consent is required, and open that contact wherever it is.
  1. Book your IELTS or TOEFL if you have yet to sit one.
  1. Request transcripts and an expected-graduation certificate from your college office now, because the office will be slower in March.
  1. Read each shortlisted programme’s current guidelines PDF end to end.

All of this costs time you have today and will have far less of by March.

A question worth asking

“Ask your consultant who runs their Japan desk, and whether that person has ever worked in Japan.”

— Sachin Gupta, Japan Desk, Top Uni Admit

Japan is a small line item in most Indian overseas education businesses, and the answer to that question tells a student a great deal about the advice they are receiving.

The 2027 Japan Admission Guide is free and carries the verified application windows and the full cost model. If you graduate in 2027 and want the October 2027 cycle mapped against your own graduation date and branch, our Japan desk is open.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for the April 2027 intake in Japan if I graduate in June 2027?

No. April enrolment falls on 1 April 2027, before you complete your B.Tech. Eligibility requires you to have graduated, or to be expected to graduate, by the enrolment date. Your first realistic entry is October or September 2027.

When do applications open for the October 2027 intake in Japan?

Windows vary by programme. Most sit between late 2026 and early 2027, with some opening in October and others running in February or March. Each programme publishes its own guidelines document, and that is the only source worth trusting.

Do I need to contact a professor before applying for an MS in Japan?

At several universities, yes, and it is a condition of applying rather than a courtesy. Institute of Science Tokyo will not consider an application without a faculty member’s consent. The University of Osaka requires approval from an academic advisor before you apply. Requirements differ elsewhere, so check each programme.

Do I need Japanese language skills for an English-taught Master’s in Japan?

English-taught programmes deliver coursework, seminars and supervision in English. Japanese is still worth learning for daily life, and some scholarships carry their own language conditions, so check the terms attached to any funding you plan to apply for. Scholarships are a starting point rather than the outcome.

Is an Indian B.Tech accepted for a Master’s in Japan?

A four-year B.Tech from a recognised Indian university generally satisfies the sixteen-years-of-education requirement that Japanese graduate programmes apply. Individual programmes set their own additional conditions, so confirm against the guidelines for the programme you want.

What documents should I prepare first?

Transcripts for every completed semester, an expected-graduation certificate from your college, a passport valid well beyond your intended entry date, an English test score, a research plan or statement of purpose, and a CV. Start with the transcripts and the expected-graduation certificate, because those depend on your college office rather than on you.
