An MS in Japan for Indian students is simple to plan once the right numbers are in front of you, and easy to budget wrongly without them. The figures that circulate online are often undergraduate rates, older schedules or third-party estimates.

Fact 1: The timeline starts with your graduation month
The first question for any MS in Japan for Indian students plan is which intake, and the answer comes from your degree certificate date.
Japanese graduate schools admit in April and in September or October. The University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering requires applicants to complete 16 years of schooling “by the day before the admission date in April or October 2027”, according to its 2027 Master’s application guidelines.
What this means for a 2027 B.Tech graduate
A student finishing in May or June 2027 has no degree on 1 April 2027. The first realistic entry is October 2027, and the fallback is April 2028. Our post on the MS in Japan intake for 2027 sets out both calendars.
Windows open this autumn
One window can serve two intakes. The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Science runs a Special Selection for International Applicants from 15 to 30 October 2026, covering April 2027 and October 2027 entry. For an MS in Japan for Indian students graduating in 2027, that is a live option this year.
Fact 2: Eligibility runs on 16 years of schooling
Twelve years of school plus a four-year B.Tech gives 16 years, which is the usual threshold for an MS in Japan for Indian students.
A three-year B.Sc. gives 15, and eligibility then depends on each programme’s own rule. Read the eligibility clause of the exact programme before paying any examination fee.
Documents that prove eligibility
Expect to submit transcripts, a degree certificate or a letter of expected graduation, and language evidence where the programme asks for it. The final degree certificate is usually due at enrolment. Fact 3: The standard tuition rate moves by university
National universities work from a standard annual rate of ¥535,800. Each university may set its own figure, so the rate is a starting point for an MS in Japan for Indian students budget, never a promise.

The undergraduate trap
UTokyo’s undergraduate tuition is ¥642,960 a year, on the same page. A family reading the first number it sees would overstate the Master’s cost by ¥107,160 a year. For an MS in Japan for Indian students, always read the graduate line.
Private universities publish their own graduate schedules, and several offer tuition reduction. Ask each graduate school for its fee schedule for your entry year, in writing.
Fact 4: Year one costs more than year two
The admission fee is paid once, at enrolment. At UTokyo that puts year-one academic fees at ¥817,800 against ¥535,800 in year two.
Examination fees also multiply. Apply to four universities at ¥30,000 each and that is ¥120,000 before any offer arrives. An MS in Japan for Indian students budget should hold that sum from the start.
Living costs, accommodation, insurance, flights and visa costs sit on top of every figure above.
Fact 5: The course runs two years by law
Japan’s Standards for the Establishment of Graduate Schools set the standard Master’s term at two years. Completion needs two years of enrolment, at least 30 credits, research guidance, and a passed Master’s thesis or research review.
The same ordinance allows completion after one year for students with outstanding results. Plan on two.
What the two years hold
Research guidance is a legal requirement of the course, so every student works under a supervisor in a laboratory, and the thesis comes out of that work. For an MS in Japan for Indian students, choose the laboratory as carefully as the university.
Fact 6: No proof-of-funds figure exists
No Japanese government body publishes a fixed monetary threshold for a student visa. The family shows the course can be funded, and the assessment is case by case.
That is the strongest single line in any MS in Japan for Indian students conversation. If someone quotes a number, ask for the source. Fact 7: Part-time work is a permission, never a budget line
Students with the Student status can apply for permission to work up to 28 hours a week, per the Immigration Services Agency.
