How JLPT registration India works
Outside Japan, the JLPT is run by local host institutions. Each one sets its own registration method and its own registration period. The official FAQ asks candidates to contact the host institution for their city before registering, because the method and the period may differ by test site.
There is no single national portal named on jlpt.jp for JLPT registration India. You register with the host in the city where you will sit the test.
The three steps jlpt.jp sets out
- Confirm the registration method with the local host institution and obtain the Test Guide, which includes the application forms.
- Register and pay the fee.
- Receive your test voucher from the local host institution.
Fees and forms are set by each host. Check them on the host’s own notice for your city, and keep a copy of what you submit.

The jlpt.jp list of overseas test cities, dated 11 September 2026, shows eight Indian cities for 2026.

The critical window
This is the costly part. JLPT registration India closes well before test day, and a missed window costs you six months.
The general pattern
jlpt.jp gives a general overseas pattern:
- July test: applications around March to April
- December test: applications around August to September
It adds that the application period varies by city. Treat these months as a guide and confirm the dates with your host.
Where that leaves you today
The second 2026 test is on Sunday 6 December 2026. The general August to September window has passed, so most candidates reading this now should plan for the July 2027 test. jlpt.jp has not yet published the July 2027 date. Watch your host’s notices from early 2027 so the JLPT registration India window does not pass you by.

- Choose your test city from the jlpt.jp list
- Note whether that city holds the July test, the December test, or both
- Find the host institution’s own notice for the session you want
- Decide your level against a real practice score

- Read the host’s Test Guide in full before you fill in the form
- Pay the fee by the method the host names, and keep the receipt
- Save a copy of your completed application
After you submit
- Track the date your test voucher should arrive
- Contact the host early if it has not arrived
- Plan travel to the test venue ahead of the day
What happens after you register
Your host institution sends the test voucher. Bring it on test day with whatever identification your host asks for.
Choose your level carefully

Prepare before the window opens
The best time to start is before JLPT registration India opens, so the level you choose is realistic. A structured Japanese language course in India helps you set that level with evidence.
Results and certificates
jlpt.jp states that every examinee receives a Certificate of Result and Scores, and successful examinees also receive a Certificate of Proficiency. Outside Japan, these go out through the local host institution.
For the December test, jlpt.jp places overseas delivery in March of the following year. Build that delay into any application that needs the certificate.
Where the JLPT fits a Master’s plan
Many English-taught Master’s programmes in Japan set their requirements in English. Japanese-taught programmes and Japanese language institutes set Japanese requirements, and the JLPT is a common way to show them.
