A Japanese language course in India is often the first money a family spends on the Japan plan, long before any application fee. Spent well, it opens doors. Spent on the wrong level, it costs months you cannot get back before an October 2027 intake.
We cover the three gaps we see most and how to close each one. The rules quoted come from the Immigration Services Agency and the official JLPT site, checked on 6 October 2026. The checks below work on any Japanese language course in India, online or in a classroom.

Why the route decides the level
Before you compare any Japanese language course in India, settle one question: will your Master’s be taught in English or in Japanese? Every other choice follows from that answer.
There are three common routes for an engineering graduate.
| Route | Who sets the Japanese requirement | Typical target |
|---|---|---|
| English-taught Master’s | The university, in its application guidelines | Check each programme; basic Japanese is a plus |
| Japanese-taught Master’s | The Immigration Services Agency standard for entrants from fiscal 2027 | B2, with JLPT N2 or above accepted in transition |
| Language institution first | The Immigration Services Agency standard for language-school entrants | A1, shown by a test certificate or a school interview |
Gap 1: the level target does not match the route
The most common mistake is enrolling in a Japanese language course in India without a target level.
If your programme is taught in Japanese
The Immigration Services Agency has set a standard for students entering universities and graduate schools from fiscal year 2027. Where classes or research supervision are in Japanese, the required level is B2 or above on Japan’s reference framework for Japanese language education. Until the end of fiscal year 2032, JLPT N2 or above counts as meeting it. The text is on the Agency’s page on Japanese ability for higher education.
Fiscal 2027 begins in April 2027, so October 2027 entrants fall under it. A Japanese language course in India that stops at N4 will leave you short on this route.
If your programme is taught in English
The university’s own guidelines decide, and you should read them line by line. A Japanese language course in India aimed at N5 or N4 suits this route well. It prepares you for daily life, lab small talk and paperwork in Japan.
If you plan language school first
The Agency’s revised handling for language-institution entrants requires A1-level Japanese, shown by a test certificate or an interview. Study hours alone no longer count. It already applies to new certificate of eligibility applications. The Agency’s notice has the detail.
Gap 2: course levels that map to nothing
Many a Japanese language course in India uses its own labels: Level 1, Basic, Foundation. Those labels mean nothing to a university or to immigration.
Ask for the mapping
A good Japanese language course in India should state which JLPT level or CEFR level each stage targets. The JLPT now publishes a CEFR reference for passing scores, starting with the December 2025 test. On that reference, an N5 pass corresponds to A1, an N4 pass to A2, and an N2 pass with 112 or more to B2. See the JLPT CEFR reference.
Ask how progress is measured
The cleanest measure is an external test. A course that builds towards a JLPT sitting gives you a certificate that never expires, according to the JLPT FAQ. A course that only issues its own completion certificate gives you much less to show an admissions office.
Check the four skills
The JLPT tests reading and listening only. If your route needs spoken Japanese from your Japanese language course in India, for an interview or a Japanese-taught lab, confirm the course gives real speaking practice too.
Gap 3: timing that misses the application
The JLPT runs in July and December. The 2026 dates are Sunday 5 July and Sunday 6 December, and some overseas cities hold only one of the two. India hosts the test in several cities, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru, with registration run by each local host.
Work backwards from October 2027
Some October 2027 application windows open this month. If your route needs a certificate at application, your Japanese language course in India must finish in time for a sitting before the deadline, with results back. For a Japanese-taught programme, that is a long runway, so start now. For an English-taught programme, a later N5 or N4 sitting can still strengthen your file.
Our post on the MS in Japan intake for 2027 explains why a student graduating in mid-2027 targets October 2027 or April 2028. For a wider view of programmes, see Japan engineering universities and our list of top universities in Japan.
A checklist for any Japanese language course in India
Use these questions on any Japanese language course in India before you pay.
- Which JLPT or CEFR level does each stage target?
- Does the course prepare for a specific JLPT sitting, and which one?
- How many hours of listening practice does it include?
- Is speaking taught, or only reading and grammar?
- Does the timetable fit your final-year B.Tech workload?
- Can you see sample material before you enrol?
Where this fits the wider plan
Language is one stream in a longer plan. Our guide to study in Japan for Indian students sets out the full sequence from shortlist to visa, and the pillar guide to study in Japan links every part of it.
Our view
Choose the route, then the level, then the Japanese language course in India that reaches that level in time. A student heading for an English-taught Master’s gains most from N5 or N4 alongside strong English scores. A student aiming at a Japanese-taught programme needs N2, and the fiscal 2027 standard makes that explicit.
