A Japan scholarship for Indian students comes through one of five routes, and each has a different funder, timing and set of conditions. They are easy to confuse, and the order you approach them in matters for an October 2027 start.

How to read this list
The official Study in Japan scholarship pamphlet for 2026 to 2027 groups funding into the Japanese government (MEXT), JASSO, local governments and associations, private foundations, and universities’ own schemes.
For each Japan scholarship for Indian students, ask three questions. Who pays? Do you apply from India or after you arrive? What conditions sit behind it? The answers sort the five routes quickly.
Timing is the big divider
The two MEXT routes decide a Japan scholarship for Indian students while you are still in India. The other three mostly start around or after enrolment. That shapes how a family plans its finances for the first year.
Route 1: MEXT University Recommendation
This is the live MEXT route for October 2027 entry, and the most complete Japan scholarship for Indian students on this list. You apply to a Japanese university, the university screens you, and it nominates successful candidates to MEXT.
The pamphlet lists the MEXT research student stipend at ¥144,000 a month for a Master’s course and ¥145,000 for a doctoral course, with exemption of examination, entrance and tuition fees, plus air travel under the scholarship’s conditions.
Timing and example
Windows are set by each university. Hokkaido University’s e3 programme runs its 2027 University Recommendation application from 20 to 29 October 2026, for October 2027 entry. Only universities holding a MEXT quota can nominate, and quotas are small.

Route 2: MEXT Embassy Recommendation
The Embassy of Japan in India runs this route. The research student window for the 2027 cycle closed on 15 May 2026.

Route 3: JASSO Honors Scholarship
JASSO’s Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students pays ¥48,000 a month at graduate level, according to the JASSO scholarship page on Study in Japan.
The conditions that decide it
This Japan scholarship for Indian students is means-tested. The average monthly remittance from home, excluding entrance and tuition fees, must be under ¥90,000. You need a GPA of at least 2.30 for the previous year. You also need a language standard: JLPT N2 or higher, an EJU Japanese score of 200 or more, or English at CEFR B2.

Route 4: University tuition exemption
National universities run their own fee exemptions, the least discussed Japan scholarship for Indian students. These reduce what you pay, with no monthly stipend.
A worked example
The University of Tokyo exemption page offers full or partial exemption from admission and tuition fees for students facing economic difficulty who are recognised as academically outstanding. Undergraduate and graduate students can apply. Research students and auditing students are excluded. Applications run during the admission procedure.

Route 5: Local government and private foundations
The 2026 to 2027 pamphlet lists 23 scholarships from local governments and associations and 74 from private foundations. Most require you to be enrolled already. The pamphlet notes that several local governments, international associations and private foundations accept applications from overseas.
How to use this route
Treat each foundation offering a Japan scholarship for Indian students as its own application, with its own deadline, field restrictions and amount. Search the Study in Japan scholarship and tuition reduction database and filter for schemes open to applicants outside Japan.

Which Japan scholarship for Indian students to target first
For a final-year B.Tech student aiming at October 2027, the order is simple.
- Build a self-funded plan first. It is the base every other route sits on.
- Add MEXT University Recommendation at universities that hold a quota and publish an October 2026 window.
- Shortlist universities with tuition exemption schemes you can apply to during admission.
- Search foundations that accept overseas applications before you leave India.
- Plan for JASSO Honors after enrolment, if you meet the remittance and language conditions.
