A study in Japan scholarship is easier to plan once you sort every option by one question: when do you apply? Some awards are decided before you leave India. Some ride on your admission application. Others open only after you enrol.
That timing decides how a study in Japan scholarship fits into your plan. It also decides what you can show at the visa stage.
This guide sorts six routes for Master’s and PhD applicants into three windows. Every figure comes from a Japanese government body or a university’s own page, checked on 25 September 2026.

Why timing matters more than the amount
Most Indian families start with the size of the award. We start with the date the decision arrives.
Japan’s Immigration Services Agency states that covering the full cost of tuition and living expenses through part-time work is not accepted. Your funding has to be real before the Certificate of Eligibility stage. Our guide to Japan student visa proof of funds explains how that evidence works.
So a study in Japan scholarship awarded after enrolment helps with the second year. It cannot carry your visa file.
The 2027 embassy route has closed
The MEXT Embassy Recommendation window for India for 2027 entry ran from 20 April to 15 May 2026. It is closed. Every study in Japan scholarship route below is still live for an October 2027 start.
Window 1: routes that ride on your admission
These routes are decided alongside your admission to a graduate school. You apply for one programme, and the university puts you forward.
Route 1: MEXT University Recommendation
Under this route a Japanese university nominates its own applicants to MEXT. The official MEXT 2027 application guidelines list a monthly allowance of ¥144,000 for Master’s students and ¥145,000 for doctoral students. The scholarship also waives examination, matriculation and tuition fees.
Applicants must be born on or after 2 April 1992. Nomination and admission are separate decisions, and quotas are small. Hokkaido University’s e3 programme takes applications from 20 to 29 October 2026 for October 2027 entry.

Route 2: University fellowships for graduate students
Some universities fund self-financed international graduate students from their own budgets. The University of Tokyo Fellowship pays a monthly research grant of ¥200,000 for the standard period of study, according to the University of Tokyo Fellowship page. Applications go through the applicant’s affiliated or prospective graduate school.
The fellowship does not cover tuition. Pair it with a fee exemption where one is available.
Window 2: routes decided around enrolment
Route 3: Tuition and admission fee exemption
The University of Tokyo exemption page offers full or partial exemption from tuition for students facing financial difficulty who also show outstanding academic results. Newly enrolled graduate students can apply. Its page notes that the chance of an admission fee exemption is quite low.
A tuition exemption lowers your bill. It pays no stipend. Treat it as a bonus on top of a funded plan, and apply for this study in Japan scholarship option the moment your admission is confirmed.
Window 3: routes that open after you arrive
Route 4: JASSO Honors Scholarship
The JASSO Honors Scholarship page lists ¥48,000 a month for graduate students. It is means-tested. The allowance you receive from home, excluding fees, must not exceed an average of ¥90,000 a month.
There is also a language condition: JLPT N2 or CEFR B2 English, outside preparatory courses. Applications go through the institution where you are enrolled. Our JASSO scholarship guide covers the common myths.
Route 5: JSPS DC fellowship for doctoral students
JSPS states there is no nationality requirement for its DC fellowships, and lists a monthly stipend of ¥200,000 to ¥230,000. This study in Japan scholarship is competitive and suits PhD students already inside a Japanese lab.
Route 6: Private foundation scholarships
The University of Tokyo lists scholarships offered by private organisations. Terms, amounts and dates vary by foundation. Most are applied for through your university after arrival.

- Shortlist programmes that hold a MEXT University Recommendation quota, and note their October 2026 windows.
- Confirm a self-funded budget your family can evidence at the visa stage.
- List the post-arrival routes you will apply for in your first semester.
Questions to ask each graduate school
Write to the admissions office of every programme on your list. Ask whether it holds a MEXT University Recommendation quota for your intake, and when it nominates. Ask which study in Japan scholarship options it runs for self-funded international students. Ask whether tuition exemption applications open before or after enrolment.
