What four universities currently say about MEXT Scholarship 2027
Tohoku University: discontinued
Tohoku carries a notification of discontinuation of the General Selection for the MEXT scholarship via University Recommendation, which removes that track from a MEXT Scholarship 2027 plan built around it. Its page separately lists English-taught programmes designated as Special Programs, which carry priority placement for MEXT students.
University of Tsukuba: expected to be discontinued
Tsukuba’s page, marked updated September 2026, states that because of a change in MEXT policy, recruitment for the University Recommendation General Program is expected to be discontinued starting in the 2027 academic year. Tsukuba continues to select candidates for programmes adopted by MEXT under the Special Program.
Institute of Science Tokyo: no call for applications
Science Tokyo states that MEXT has announced it will not call for applications for MEXT scholarship students under the General scheme from 2026 onwards, which covers the MEXT Scholarship 2027 round.
UTokyo GSFS: unresolved, with procedure changed
The Graduate School of Frontier Sciences at Kashiwa says it is currently unclear whether the programme continues from AY2027. GSFS has therefore changed its procedure: applicants for a regular degree programme in the Fall Semester of 2027 must apply for and sit the Schedule B entrance examination for their department. If the General Category is confirmed for Fall 2027 entry, GSFS will then provide scholarship information to Schedule B applicants who meet the criteria.
One thing to keep straight
That last position belongs to one graduate school at Kashiwa. Other faculties of the University of Tokyo publish separately, so a MEXT Scholarship 2027 plan built on a single page will miss what the others say.
Why the General Selection matters for MEXT Scholarship 2027
Two doors lead into the same MEXT Scholarship 2027 award. The embassy route runs through the Embassy of Japan in your country, and the India window for the 2027 cycle closed on 15 May 2026. The University Recommendation route runs through the Japanese university, which nominates you to MEXT directly.

Programme choice now carries the funding
If the General Selection is going, funded entry runs through designated programmes. That moves the decision forward in your timeline, because the programme is chosen at the point of application.

- General departments at the same universities move down
- A university with no designated English-taught programme in your field drops out of the funded conversation entirely
The supervisor step gets earlier, not later
Tsukuba’s own instruction is that the University Recommendation application must go through your prospective academic advisor, starting with an email asking whether they will recommend you. Guidelines follow around mid-November. That sequence works only if the first contact happened months before.

No public MEXT announcement settling the question for October 2027 entry has been located. Four universities have published, and their wordings range from discontinued to expected to be discontinued to unclear.
For anyone planning a MEXT Scholarship 2027 application, that gap has a cost. Waiting for certainty pushes you past application deadlines that fall in October and November 2026. Acting on one university’s page risks building around a position another university has already moved past.
The workable answer is to plan for the narrower outcome and treat any continuation of the General Selection as upside.
What to do this month on MEXT Scholarship 2027
- Check the MEXT Scholarship 2027 page of every university on your shortlist individually, and note the date each page was updated
- Identify which of your target programmes are designated Special Programs
- Email prospective supervisors now where the university requires advisor consent
- Keep a privately funded plan running in parallel, built on the fee you would pay in full
- Re-check each page in mid-November, when the guidelines are published
