The Monbukagakusho scholarship is the Japanese Government’s own scholarship for international students, now usually called the MEXT scholarship. It comes in seven types. Only one of them fits a final-year B.Tech student applying for a Master’s, and choosing it correctly is the first real decision.
This guide lists every type of the Monbukagakusho scholarship, as the official Study in Japan portal sets them out, then explains the one we plan around.

One scholarship, two names
Monbukagakusho is the Japanese name for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, shortened in English to MEXT. The Study in Japan portal uses both, calling it the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship. So a search for the Monbukagakusho scholarship and a search for the MEXT scholarship lead to the same programme.
A similar name for a different award
The Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students is a separate programme. The University of Tokyo’s 2027 MEXT page states that it “does not come under the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship programs.” Our JASSO scholarship guide explains that one.

The portal lists seven types of the Monbukagakusho scholarship, and two ways in: embassy recommendation and university recommendation.

YLP candidates come through official overseas recommending organisations, which is why both columns read no.
The graduate-level types
Three types of the Monbukagakusho scholarship sit at graduate school level.
Research students
This is the type for Master’s and doctoral study. The portal requires applicants to be under 35 and eligible for admission to a Master’s or doctoral programme at a Japanese graduate school. The monthly amount is listed as ¥143,000 to ¥145,000, with tuition exempted.
Embassy applicants in this type sit examinations in Japanese and English. University applicants follow each university’s own process.
Teacher training students
This type needs at least five years of active experience as a teacher in a primary, secondary or teacher training college in your home country. The portal adds that college and university teachers in active service are excluded. It runs through embassy recommendation only.
Young Leaders Program
YLP is a one-year Master’s course at a graduate school. The portal describes candidates as university graduates with practical work experience, and young public administrators, expected to play an active role in Asia and other countries.
The undergraduate-level types
Four types of the Monbukagakusho scholarship sit at undergraduate level, and the portal’s conditions show who each is written for.
- Undergraduate students: under 25, with 12 years of school education completed
- Japanese studies students: aged 18 to 29, enrolled in a Japanese language or culture course at a university outside Japan
- College of technology students: under 25, with 11 or more years of education, entering the third year of a college of technology
- Specialized training college students: under 25, with 12 years of schooling, entering specialised courses
A student who already holds or is finishing a B.Tech is looking at a Master’s, so these four sit outside the plan we build.
The critical choice for a B.Tech graduate
For a final-year B.Tech student, the Monbukagakusho scholarship decision comes down to Research students, and then to the route.
Choose the route by your calendar
The India embassy round for the 2027 cycle closed on 15 May 2026. For a student graduating in May or June 2027, the Monbukagakusho scholarship for October 2027 entry runs through university recommendation. The portal notes that university-recommended grantees “usually arrive in Japan in September or October.”
The portal also states that “not all universities maintain their own recommendation quotas.” Checking the quota comes before anything else in a Monbukagakusho scholarship plan, and it is a university-by-university task. How long the funding runs
For Research students through embassy recommendation, the portal sets irregular courses within two years and regular courses for the standard school year, with six months of preliminary education where needed. Through university recommendation, the duration “depends on each school’s quota”, up to the standard school year.

Questions students ask us
Is the Monbukagakusho scholarship the same as MEXT?
Yes. The portal uses both names for the Japanese Government scholarship.
Can Indian nationals apply for the Monbukagakusho scholarship?
Yes. The University of Tokyo’s 2027 page requires the nationality of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan, which India holds, and excludes applicants who hold Japanese nationality at the time of application.
Does the Monbukagakusho scholarship need Japanese?
For embassy Research students, the portal lists examinations in Japanese and English. University routes set their own language conditions.
Which type do most Indian Master’s applicants need?
Research students. It is the type of the Monbukagakusho scholarship built for Master’s and doctoral entry across academic fields, and it is open through both routes.
Does the Monbukagakusho scholarship charge an application fee through a university?
Universities set their own admission examination fees. The 2027 Research Student guidelines state that entrance examination, matriculation and tuition fees are waived for grantees.
